Are You Scared to Be a Pilot?

More than two decades of flying had me hooked, and while I've been a pilot since 1995 for over 20 years, the recent changes in my income and the scarcity of aircraft rental places have put a strain on my passion. I've been wondering, is there any truth to the notion of being scared to be a pilot?

Am I "Scared" to Be a Pilot?

An active pilot for over 40 years, I have faced plenty of challenges and moments of concern, but fear isn't quite the right word. Instead, I'm wary of the inherent risks that come with flying a private airplane.

While the risk of flying a small airplane is undoubtedly higher compared to other forms of transportation, statistics show that operating a small aircraft can be significantly more dangerous. However, this doesn't necessarily mean I find it scary. The thrill of flying, the exhilaration of experiencing amazing views, and the sense of freedom it brings are incredibly rewarding.

I’m Not Scared, but I’m Wary

Look, statistics tell us that private airplane pilots in small airplanes are engaged in an activity that is quite dangerous. Their own worst enemy, often, is a lack of proper care and training, leading to a high number of fatalities. But it is not just about the risk; it's about the rewards. If a pilot can bring a level of care, training, and prudence to the pilot's seat, the risk level can be significantly reduced.

That being said, attempting to avoid all risk is human nature, and some moments of stupidity can still happen. Despite my best efforts to make flying as safe as possible, sometimes things just go wrong no matter how prepared you are.

The thing is, I accept that the level of risk is worth the rewards. Flying a small airplane is an extraordinary experience, and the fatality rate among pilots trained and industrious is much lower than the statistics suggest.

The Cost

While the thrill of flying is a constant source of joy, the financial aspect is a real concern. Renting an aircraft is now ridiculously expensive if rental places were around. Without the financial means to continue flying, the thrill has been minimized, and the question of being scared to be a pilot has become a minor concern in comparison.

Am I scared? Not really. What I am is wary and careful. Flying is a rewarding experience, and as long as the pilot is vigilant and follows all the necessary safety measures, the risk is manageable.

Flying as a Joke

Lastly, it's worth noting that being a pilot is also a great punchline. Whenever I check into a hotel in full airline uniform, I always request a low-level room and tell the clerk that I'm afraid of heights. Their puzzled looks turn into laughter when I reveal this is just a joke. I then close my eyes and say "Yes, I am scared, and this is why I'm okay with it."

Even though my wife hates my jokes, they provide a lighthearted moment during a potentially stressful situation.

Whether you are scared to be a pilot or not, it's all about finding the balance between embracing the thrill and staying mindful of the risks. For me, it's all about enjoying the fantastic experience of flying without being terrorized by every statistic.
