Can I Use Credit Card Only on a Carnival Cruise? Navigating Payment Options
Do I Need To Bring Cash on a Carnival Cruise?
When planning a Carnival cruise, one of the most common questions swirling around is: do you need to bring cash? The cruise line's preference is to streamline transactions using a credit or debit card, but it's not entirely necessary to bring cash. However, it always pays to be prepared.
Understanding Carnival's Payment System
The cruise line operates in a manner similar to a floating hotel, where every passenger is required to have a credit or debit card on file. Upon boarding, your credit card is linked to a Sail and Sign account, which is used to charge all your onboard expenses. These charges include dining, excursions, and activities. At the end of the cruise, a ledger is provided detailing all the charges accumulated during the voyage.
Once you review the charges, you accept or dispute them. If you accept, the amount is deducted from your card on file, and the charges are considered?settled. If you dispute any charges, you go to customer service for resolution.
Onboard Payments Simplified
Most transactions on a Carnival cruise can be handled with a credit or debit card. You can make purchases using your credit card linked to your room. Additionally, many shops and services, including those running the shops, accept credit cards.
However, there are scenarios where having cash at hand is beneficial:
Small Purchases at Ports of Call: Some local vendors may prefer cash for small purchases, like souvenirs or snacks. Tipping: While credit cards are accepted, cash is still the preferred method for tipping on cruise ships. It allows you to give a more immediate and personal touch. Casino Gaming, Bingo, Shopping, and Meals in Port: These activities often require cash. For instance, if you plan to visit a casino or shop in the local area or have meals at port, you should bring enough cash to cover these expenses. Additionally, you may want cash for taxis to and from various towns if you are not part of a shore excursion.
Personal Experience
My personal experience indicates that bringing cash is not always necessary. On a recent Carnival cruise, I never used cash for any transactions. All charges were processed using my Ship Card, which serves as both an ID and a payment method. In my case, the onboard offerings were such that I didn't spend much, and most of the food was complimentary.
However, it's always a good idea to have some cash on hand. My upcoming 10-day cruise to Mexico has me checking my wallet for cash a few hours before departure, just to ensure I have enough funds. I like to tip at the beginning of meal services, but I may add to the tip at the end.
Ultimately, while doing away with cash is becoming more common, having a little cash on hand can make your cruise more convenient and enjoyable. Whether you use credit cards or cash, both methods have their pros and cons, so it's always a good idea to be prepared.
