In the U.S., all gasoline must meet certain minimum federal standards under the Clean Air Act, which mandates the use of detergents to reduce deposits in engines. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) introduced Tier 2 standards, which require all grades of fuel at a single station to have the same level of detergents.

While all fuels have detergents, additional additives in the form of top-tier packages can further benefit engine performance. A study by AAA found that engines run on non-Top Tier gas had 16 times more deposits compared to those run on Top Tier fuels.
