Overhead and surface clearances are necessary to allow easy passage of drainage pipes. Additionally, pipes are strategically placed under the road to facilitate drainage underneath.

The subgrade is the underlying soil layer that supports the earthen road. The following steps ensure the subgrade is ready for the road surface:
Rolling and Watering: The subgrade is initially rolled to remove any lumps and water is sprayed to achieve optimum moisture content. Spreading of Soil: Good quality soil is spread across the subgrade layer by layer. Each layer is typically no more than 500 mm thick. Rolling at Optimum Moisture Content: The soil is rolled again to compact it, aiming for the optimal moisture content to ensure the best compaction. Checking and Curing: Final checks are made to ensure the subgrade meets the required specifications. Afterward, the subgrade is allowed to cure for a specified period to allow the soil to settle and regain its strength.Final Construction
Once the subgrade is prepared, the road surface is constructed. The process involves spreading and compacting layers of gravel, ensuring proper camber for water drainage. Traction can be improved by adding gravel or a light layer of oil to the surface, though these are considered luxuries in common earthen road construction.
