Introduction to DriveNow and Car2Go

As an avid user of car-sharing services in Berlin, I have been registered with both DriveNow and Car2Go for over five years. Both ventures started as joint projects, with DriveNow, initially a collaboration between BMW and Sixt, and Car2Go, a joint venture between Daimler and Europcar. Over the years, these services have evolved significantly, catering to the urban needs of Berlin while providing environmentally friendly alternatives to traditional car ownership.

Early Access Methods and Innovations

The earliest form of access for DriveNow required users to visit a Sixt rental station and sign a contract, after which they would receive a sticker with an RFID chip attached to their driver's license. This sticker was to be placed on the windshield for identification. Interestingly, Car2Go initially required a unique setup, where users had to take a key from the glove box and start the engine. However, both systems underwent significant changes to enhance user convenience, eventually allowing access via smartphone.

Vehicle Selection: DriveNow and Car2Go

DriveNow: Impressively, DriveNow always offered a more exciting range of vehicles. This included models such as the Mini Convertibles, BMW 2 Series Convertibles, and even a considerable number of electric vehicles, notably the BMW i3. These vehicles were not only stylish but also environmentally friendly, making car-sharing more attractive for eco-conscious users.

Car2Go: Despite starting with only Tiny cars (Smarts), Car2Go has since expanded its fleet to include smaller Mercedes A and B class vehicles. While these models are also practical and often preferred by commuters, my personal preference leans towards the more distinctive and unique offerings from DriveNow.

Usage Frequency and Flexibility

Interestingly, while I have been a member of both services for over five years, my usage has been quite limited. The primary reason for this is that the situations where car-sharing fits perfectly are rare. However, whenever I travel to Berlin, I make great use of these services, benefiting from the flexibility and convenience they offer in navigating urban areas.

Conclusion: Flexibility and Convenience in Berlin

Overall, both DriveNow and Car2Go have played a significant role in shaping the landscape of Berlin's urban transport. The evolution of their access systems and vehicle offerings has been instrumental in making car-sharing a viable and appealing option for residents and visitors alike. Whether you prefer the unique models of DriveNow or the slightly more conventional options from Car2Go, these services offer flexibility, convenience, and an eco-friendly alternative to traditional car ownership.
