Driving in the Netherlands with an Indian License: A Comprehensive Guide
Can I Drive in the Netherlands with an Indian License?
Yes, you can drive in the Netherlands with an Indian driving license for a short period, particularly if you are a tourist or visiting for less than 185 days. However, if you plan to stay longer or wish to reside in the country, you will need to exchange your Indian license for a Dutch one. This process can vary depending on the duration of your stay, your resident status, and the prevailing regulations between India and the Netherlands.
Driving Conditions for Temporary Visitors
If you have a foreign license in English or any European language or an International Driving Permit (IDP), you can generally drive in the Netherlands for up to 6 months. This is especially true for visitors or tourists. However, it's important to ensure your license is valid for the duration of your stay and to have necessary documentation in your possession.
Requirements and Exchange Process for Permanent Residents
For those planning to stay longer or become residents, the following steps are required to obtain a Dutch driving license:
Foreign License Exchange: If you have 30 points (regardless of nationality), you can exchange your original Indian license for a Dutch one at a nominal fee. You will need to surrender your original Indian license in exchange for a Dutch license. After about a month, your original Indian license will be sent to the Indian embassy where it can be collected in person or authorized by a handwritten letter. Multistep Application Process:1. Buy an Application Form: Purchase the necessary application form from the local town hall, paying approximately €25.
2. Fill Out the Form: Refer to the guidelines at the bottom of this page to complete your application form.
3. Submit the Application: Send your completed application along with your original license, 30 ruling approval letter (if applicable), and a photo to the stated address.
4. Receive Approval Letter: You will receive an approval letter from CBR (Center for Driver's Licensing) in about 2-3 weeks.
5. Final Submission: Visit the town hall again and submit your application, together with your CBR approval letter, original license, 30 ruling approval letter, and a new photo. You will need to pay approximately €25.
6. Collect Your Dutch License: In approximately 2-3 weeks, you will receive a letter confirming your Dutch license is ready for collection at the town hall.
Additional Considerations
Occasionally, you might receive a letter from RDW (Dienst RIJsveiligheid Wijzigingen) stating the need to submit an "Original Statement of Authenticity of Your Indian Driving License." In such cases, you can request your issuing RTO (Transportation Office) in India to issue an "Extract of Driving License." Your relative or driving license school can go to the RTO office with a copy of your driving license and request the extract. Fill out the relevant form, and they will put a stamp on it, giving you half of the form to keep and half to them. This same form is used when you have lost your driving license. Send the extract to RDW, then go to the town hall to collect your Dutch license.
Spouses and Exemptions
If you are not eligible for license exchange, you will need to undergo a theory and driving test. For more detailed information on how to get a Dutch driving license, visit the relevant page.
