Evolution of Indian Railways: An Analysis of Service Quality and Infrastructure

Indian Railways continues to be a vital mode of transportation for millions of Indians. While some may argue that the service is worsening, the reality is a complex mix of progress and challenges. Service Time and Maintenance

The foundation of any reliable transportation system is its service time and maintenance. India's railways have faced budgetary constraints, which has affected both service time and maintenance schedules. The absence of a separate budget dedicated to railway maintenance is a significant concern. However, there are initiatives to reduce manpower requirements by filling back lock vacancies. Additionally, reducing the duty hours to less than 8 hours can help alleviate fatigue and stress among employees, ultimately benefiting service quality.

While Bande Bharat Express (MBE) remains a flagship project with improvements, it is essential to consider the entire spectrum of Indian Railways' service. Other trains, including Shatabdi, Rajdhani, Super Fast, and Mail Express, have unique characteristics and purposes that cater to different segments of the population.

Speed and Technological Advancements

Regarding speed, a decline is often seen as a sign of worsening service. The reality, however, is nuanced. Many non-elite super fast trains were faster before 1981 and only some have been restored to their original speeds or even improved. While certain aspects have indeed seen improvements, such as the introduction of 3A coach classes (now 3A economy), and the running of Humsafar and Duranto express trains, the overall progress is hindered by insufficient additions to line capacities and modernization efforts.

There is a need for substantial investment in modernizing tracks and signaling systems. Over the next decade, we may see improvements that address these needs. However, it's crucial that any new train additions are carefully managed to ensure that the existing improvements are not nullified.

Sustainable Practices in Indian Railways

One commendable initiative in Indian Railways is the effort to reduce food waste. In August 2019, the Indian Railways leadership implemented a public refrigerator at Hubballi railway station in Karnataka. This move allows passengers and staff to store surplus food, ensuring that it is not wasted and can instead be used by those in need. The initiative has received positive feedback, with around 100 people already utilizing the refrigerator since its launch.

Infrastructure and Government Support

The statement that "Indian railways are not getting worse" highlights a significant improvement in the administration under the Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu's tenure. Efforts are being made to enhance train schedules, ensuring that as many trains as possible run on time. The introduction of various train categories, such as Rajdhani, Shatabdi, and Garib Rath, cater to diverse needs, including affordability and convenience.

These trains serve various purposes. The Shatabdi trains, known for speed and fewer stops, are ideal for business travelers and those with time constraints. On the other hand, the Garib Rath trains are specifically designed for budget-conscious travelers, offering first-class experiences at reduced costs. The Rajdhani and Express trains fill the gap between luxury and budget, providing a balance of comfort and affordability.
