Experience and Thoughts on Using KTM Adventure for Long Highway Rides

My 1250 Super Adventure was very good but not great as a touring bike. However, I understand that KTM finally acknowledged and fixed the fueling problem that plagued my 2014 model, so you should not have that issue.

Engine and Mileage

The engine on the KTM Adventure is more than sufficient for higher speeds, despite initial concerns with gas mileage never exceeding high 30s to low 40s. Nevertheless, it managed to achieve the same mileage at both 75mph and 65mph, making it a great choice for long rides. With the robust 17.6-liter (5.2-gallon) fuel tank, the Adventure is capable of covering vast distances.

Storage and Accessories

Equipped with a top case and tank bag, you have plenty of storage space for a long trip. While the panniers never broke, they appeared a bit flimsy, especially for light-weight items. It's important to handle them with care as they are not designed for casual use.

Seating and Comfort

The seating position on the Adventure is upright and comfortable, as is common for adventure bikes. However, it took me only a first medium ride to realize that the comfortable seat was inadequate. Replacing the stock seat was a must, and I recommend considering this for your comfort and the longevity of your ride.

Wind Protection and Comfort

The stock fairing does a decent job of shielding your chest from the wind, but it falls short in protecting your arms and hands. The stock windscreen directs air directly at your helmet, creating a lot of noise and discomfort. For long-distance highway riding, I would advise raising the windscreen by a couple of inches. Additionally, lower windshields can keep your helmet in cleaner air for shorter or dirt road rides. It's easy to adjust the windscreen to your liking, allowing for flexibility in your riding experience.

Comparison with Other Motorcycle Designs

During my ownership of various BMWs, I found wind tunnel-designed fairings to be superior to the smaller fairings on Adventure bikes. These fairings excel in reducing wind resistance and improving comfort, making them ideal for long-distance highway riding. However, if you're looking for a bit of extra power, a little dirt road capability, and a design that doesn't resemble an 'old man' bike, a KTM can serve as a decent long-distance touring bike with some modifications.

Overall, while the KTM Adventure has its limitations, it offers a solid base for long highway rides, especially when augmented with the right accessories. Whether you're a seasoned traveler or just starting out, the Adventure can serve as a satisfying companion for both leisure and adventure.
