Bright pink petals from Flame-of-the-forest trees float by, brushing gently against the train windows.

As the journey progresses, the railway descends into the Western Ghats, a lush green landscape that skirts the mountainous terrain. The scenic beauty becomes more profound as one witnesses cascades and river valleys. The sunlight lowers in the late afternoon, casting an unusual red hue over the terrace terrains, making the landscapes even more enchanting. The Indian railways offer a unique travel experience, especially when accompanied by the company of fellow passengers. One of the most memorable journeys I’ve been on was a return trip after 4 months away from home, orientated in Punjab, a remote region in northern India.

I boarded my final train at Visakhapatnam and headed towards Palasa, my hometown, a journey that took around 4 hours. Located in the sleeper class, I had a lower berth and sat down, ready to get some work done on my laptop. In front of me sat a family with two little girls. After exchanging pleasantries, I settled down to complete my pending office works.

Five minutes into my work, I noticed a tiny girl peep behind my laptop screen. Her curiosity grew, and she would peek from the left edge and then move to the right edge, each time she was noticed. Encouraged by her innocent play, I decided to spend a few minutes with her. I started making animated gestures, mimicking a Godzilla, which earned me a mesmerizing smile from the little girl. She then came closer and sat beside me, transfixed by the scrambled letters and then by the cartoon videos I played on my mobile. We had an almost one-and-a-half-hour shared experience, during which time it felt like seconds passed by.

Embracing the Simple Joy

The train journey continued, and despite the interruptions from the little girl, I was content. My mobile’s battery was depleting, but the joy and happiness of the little girl’s company was worth it. Eventually, my phone went off, and it seemed to be discharging faster than usual. However, the sighting of her smiling face was a moment of pure joy that I treasured.

With the battery gone, the little girl took back my mobile and continued to watch YouTube videos. My train journey was filled with her laughter and the warmth of her smile. As we approached my station, the girl begged me to stay, and I was equally reluctant to leave. We exchanged goodbyes, both hoping to meet again.

Though we were strangers, the bond that formed in just a few hours is one that cannot be broken. Those few hours on the train created a connection that transcends time.
