Has the World Improved or Deteriorated Over the Last Two Decades?

As we reflect on life at 47, it's uncanny how little things have changed from when I was 37 in 2014, especially on a personal level. The major disruptions like the pandemic aside, my experiences have largely remained the same—a stark routine akin to the famous plot of Groundhog Day. However, when comparing myself today to who I was two decades ago in 2004, the contrast is overwhelming, almost like comparing two entirely different worlds. In 2004, the world had a more optimistic spirit, there was less stress, and the energy of being 27 was distinctly vibrant.

The Changing Landscape

Comparing the present to the past, many of the current challenges were already in evidence ten years ago, often laying the groundwork for the subsequent decades. Yet, the advancement of technologies and the comfort of digital living have undoubtedly ushered in a new era. The way people live today, given the benefits of rapid technological advancement, is indeed more comfortable. However, this progress is marred by sociological issues and ethical dilemmas.

Sociological Insights

From a sociological perspective, the world oscillates between different economic systems: capitalism, communism, and socialism, each with its own merits and drawbacks. In 1991, during a transition from communism, finance minister Dr. Manmohan Singh signed for the Economic Liberalization (LPG) model. This shift towards a more capitalist economy was crucial in shaping the 90s and the early 2000s. However, it also brought about inequalities and challenges that persist today.

Current Challenges and Social Issues

Today, crime rates are a cause for concern, and a pervasive sense of futility and blame is evident. People often pass the buck, resulting in a society where entire races are treated with suspicion and prejudice merely because they exist. This is a stark reflection of a flawed and unequal system that has not evolved as much as it should have. The moral fabric of society seems to be tearing apart, with the 'Evil 95 - Good 5' mentality prevailing. Stupid people, in essence, appear to rule over the more intelligent and ethical individuals. This dichotomy is not just alarming but also indicative of deeper societal issues that need immediate attention.

Technological Advancements and Their Impact

Despite these negatives, technological advancements have brought unprecedented comfort and convenience. The digital era has revolutionized the way we live, work, and communicate, making life in many aspects effortless and seamless. However, the downside of this technological boom is the callous treatment of our communities and the increasing focus on short-term gains at the expense of long-term societal well-being.

Towards a Better Future

The world, however, doesn't seem to be improving significantly. Even though we face potential self-destruction, it serves as a wake-up call. We need to confront our inherently selfish, egoistic, and exploitative nature, the root cause of all harm. By doing so, we can consciously and methodically change our ways, leading to a better world. The Western world, currently, is in a confusing phase of confusion, which will likely continue towards its self-inflicted phase of destruction. This path toward self-destruction will eventually force us to rise and rebuild.

Ultimately, the future is what we make it. Though challenges persist, with every reversal comes a painful consequence that forces us to reconsider and adapt. Our journey towards a better world is a gradual process, marked by occasional reversals that push us forward to reconsider our actions and make positive changes. It is a call to action for all of us to reflect, learn, and evolve, ensuring a better future for ourselves and future generations.
