Indian Railways: Meeting the Lockdown Challenge and Demonstrating Resilience

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Indian Railways faced a significant challenge with millions of migrant workers returning home. However, it successfully navigated these difficulties and has since become a crucial lifeline for the country. At the onset of the lockdown, Indian Railways struggled to facilitate the safe return of migrant workers and essential goods. Due to the sudden closure of train services, many individuals began their long journeys on foot, resulting in numerous tragic deaths. This forced the Railway Ministry to reconsider its initial strategy and take swift action to address the humanitarian crisis.

Realizing that mass travel is most economical and efficient, Indian Railways began running special passenger and freight trains. Built by the Rail Coach Factory RCF Kapurthala, Jeevan is made from materials available in the factory, costing approximately Rs. 10,000 without the compressor. It is expected that the factory can produce around 100 such ventilators daily, which is crucial given the high demand. In addition to the Jeevan ventilators, the Indian Railways have also converted 5,000 coaches into 80,000 isolation beds. The Indian Railways have also produced millions of masks and PPEs in-house to ensure availability across the country. Chittaranjan Loco Works (CLW) has manufactured in-house hospital beds and side drawers specifically for isolation wards. Additionally, workshops at IRCTC have produced over 280,000 masks and 25,000 liters of sanitizers.

In times of need, the railways have also been using their production units to contribute to the national effort. Base kitchens across IRCTC have been preparing food and distributing it to the needy communities. A commendable effort from 13 lakh railway employees, who also donated one day's salary to the PM CARES fund, highlights the collective spirit of the organization.
