My Journey into Transportation Engineering: A Lifelong Passion for Mobility

My journey into transportation engineering was a winding path, shaped by academic interests, practical experiences, and personal sacrifices. It began with a desire to become an aeronautical engineer, influenced by my parents and the resources available at the University of Pisa. However, my academic struggles and a pivotal decision to join the army marked a turning point in my career path. This decision, though challenging, laid the groundwork for my eventual specialization in transportation engineering.

Choosing Transportation Engineering: A Multi-disciplinary Approach

I chose transportation engineering not only because it offered a blend of civil engineering disciplines such as structural, geotechnical, and environmental engineering but also because it aligned with my fascination for practical applications and problem-solving. The rapid growth and development in India's highway sector, along with a growing global emphasis on sustainable transportation, made this field particularly appealing. My decision to pursue a PhD in transportation engineering was driven by a deep interest in exploring new possibilities, learning about innovative materials and their behavior, and engaging with cutting-edge research.

A Rural Exodus and a New Beginning

A public confession: My initial aspirations were to become an aeronautical engineer, inspired by the University of Pisa. However, a series of unfortunate events and my resulting underperformance led me to take a break in the army. Serving in anti-aircraft artillery and defending the Italian-USA AFB in Sigonella, Sicily, during a critical time between the USA and Libya in 1986, was a stark departure from my academic pursuits. After my military service, I enrolled in civil engineering at the University of Cagliari. The decision to focus on transport engineering was practical, as it was the only course that accepted my previous specialized courses like aerodynamics and technical drawing.

A Specialization in Vehicle Dynamics and Economics

My initial aim was to specialize in vehicle dynamics and road infrastructure. But during my Master's program, I developed a keen interest in economics, which led me to pursue a PhD in transport economics. My dissertation focused on creating mathematical models to estimate the demand for mobility based on individuals' behavioral patterns. This interdisciplinary approach not only broadened my skill set but also prepared me for a career in both academia and industry.

A Career in Urban Planning and Mobility

Although I enjoyed my academic pursuits, the transition from academia to industry was a natural progression. After seven years in academia, I moved into consultancy, where I found my true passion. My work primarily involves collaborating with urban planners to address various mobility issues. Recently, my primary focus has been on the applications of driverless vehicles in public transit, which aligns well with my long-standing interest in innovation and practical applications.

While I am content with my job and hope to continue working in this field for years to come, my complicated and discontinuous academic career has sometimes felt like a challenge. The late start has made it essential for me to make the most of my current role, continuously learning and evolving with the field of mobility.

In summary, my journey from aeronautical to transportation engineering is a testament to the importance of flexibility and the ability to adapt to new opportunities. My passion for transportation engineering has guided me through various phases of my career, making each step a valuable learning experience.
