With the recent surge in people taking to the sidewalks and roads for exercise, it feels like we've returned to a time when the streets were bustling with activity. In fact, this phenomenon is reminiscent of the Pokemon Go era, when people were engrossed in their own adventures right there on the streets.

Health Concerns with Outdoor Exercise

However, as with many aspects of daily life during the pandemic, health concerns have risen. Health professionals are now concerned about the airborne nature of the coronavirus, which suggests it may linger in the air longer than previously thought. This is evidenced by tragic events like the fatal choir practice outbreak, where airborne transmission was strongly suspected.

Considering these health risks, it's advisable to take precautions when engaging in outdoor activities. For instance, wearing a mask, bandana, or scarf when walking might help reduce the risk of exposure. Running in a mask unless absolutely necessary can be distressing, but staying at least six feet away from others is crucial to mitigate the risk of transmission.

Strategies for Safe Exercise

One of the best ways to ensure safety while running or walking is to choose routes where you can maintain a safe distance from others. If you are fortunate enough to have space to do so, such routes can significantly reduce the risk of exposure to the virus. However, if you don't have the luxury of such spaces, it's essential to adhere to certain guidelines to minimize risk.

A popular approach is to run with someone on opposite sides of the sidewalk. While some may prefer to run alone, this allows you both to maintain a safe distance, especially in areas that are typically crowded. If you encounter someone coming towards you, the established norm is to move to the side of the road, watching for traffic as necessary. This ensures you and the other person stay safe and maintain distance.

In situations where a runner or walker is passing you from behind, they have already begun to move into a safe distance, so you can do the same. This automatic response has become second nature, making it feel as if there is an unwritten code of conduct that we all follow.

Positive Aspects of Social Distancing while Running

One of the more positive outcomes of this new norm is the opportunity for a friendly exchange. Smiling, waving, and even saying a quick "hey" can be a welcome break from the usual rigors of street running. Whether it’s a solo run or a run with a companion, these small interactions can make the experience more enjoyable and meaningful.

While some runners wear masks, it's not necessary to do so if you can maintain the six-foot distance. Wearing a mask can be comforting, but it may become uncomfortable in certain situations. Ultimately, staying cautious and aware of your surroundings is key to a safe and enjoyable running experience.
