Additionally, I have a permanently installed propane-fueled 8KW generator with an automatic transfer switch. When the utility power goes out, it seamlessly switches to generator power, ensuring that the lights, appliances, refrigerator, and freezer remain operational. While this generator is not portable, it's an indispensable part of our home's emergency plan.

Vegetable Oil and Other Fuels

Another interesting type of generator that uses vegetable oil, diesel, or rendered oil from various sources, can also provide reliable power. These generators are not portable and require specific fuel types, but they can be a useful alternative in certain situations.

Propane-Fueled Portable Generators

Having a smaller, portable propane-powered generator is also a good option. Ours is about 3200 watts and, fortunately, we have plenty of propane. It has provided essential power during Texas's infamous "snowmageddon," keeping the central heat, refrigerator, and freezer running. While we hope to never need it again, its capability to sustain a home in extreme cold conditions is invaluable.
