India's Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, through the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI), is making significant strides in the construction and maintenance of its extensive highway network. NHAI manages the National Highways Development Project (NHDP), which aims to construct and upgrade 50,329 kilometers of national highways, covering additional minor projects.

Current Progress

As of the recent guidelines issued to Regional Officers (ROs) and Project Directors, NHAI HQ is utilizing its Project Management Software, named 'Data Lake,' to closely monitor the progress of all repair works. This system will document all before and after photos and related information to ensure transparency and accountability in the execution of projects. According to NHAI, 3,979 kilometers of National Highways were constructed in the fiscal year 2019-2020, with a target of developing approximately 27,500 kilometers of National Highways under Phase-I of the Bharatmala Project.

New Highway Numbers and Growth

India's highway system is expanding at a remarkable pace. Currently, there are 87 highways in the new numbering system, up from about 228 national highways in the old numbering system. Under the new system, all north-south oriented highways are numbered with even numbers, increasing from the north to the south. NHAI aims to complete a total of 200,000 kilometers of national highways by 2022, with ambitious targets of awarding 15,000 kilometers of projects and constructing 10,000 kilometers of national highways within the financial year 2019.
