Sleeper Train Passenger Capacity: How Many Can Fit?

When you book a long-distance train trip, especially a sleeper train, you have your own room or compartment to enjoy a private space. Unlike some foreign trains where you may have to share a compartment with a stranger, sleeper trains offer you the luxury of isolation. For instance, a roomette can accommodate two people, while a deluxe bedroom can house up to three. However, even if you’re traveling alone, you can opt for a larger room for your comfort.

Train Services and Passenger Count

The number of passengers allowed on a sleeper train can vary depending on the specific service you are considering. Let’s take a closer look at the Caledonian Sleeper services from London to Scotland. These services include twelve sleeping cars. Nine of these sleeping cars have ten compartments each, and the remaining three include some with disabled access and some with double beds. Each compartment can accommodate two people either in bunks or in three compartments with double beds. The top bunk can be folded away if you book a single-occupancy compartment, and thus the maximum number of beds is 216.

Both the “Lowlander” and the “Highlander” services divide their en route carriages. The “Lowlander” has six sleeping cars for each of Edinburgh and Glasgow, while the “Highlander” has six for Inverness. The other six sleeping cars are split between Fort William and Aberdeen depending on demand. Additionally, each portion includes a coach with 30 seats for passengers who prefer not to use a bed, as well as a “club car” also with 30 seats, which is for sleeping car passengers. Therefore, the maximum number of passengers a sleeper train leaving Euston can carry is 276.

European and American Sleeper Cars

The capacity of sleeper train accommodations in Europe and America can vary. In Europe, Wagons lits (a type of sleeping car) are still in use. In the United States, Pullman made sleeping cars, which included berths, couchettes, and compartments. Some of these may still be in service, but it’s essential to check with the railway on which you plan to travel for accurate information.

Comfort and Safety Considerations

For a comfortable and safe journey, the number of passengers in a sleeping carriage is crucial. Generally, two people per room are comfortable. For a family, fours can fit comfortably. Safety should also be taken into account to avoid overcrowding. Currently, it’s important to note that masks are required for everyone and must be enforced, except in your bedroom, in the dining car, washroom, or in the sleeper car.

To ensure a comfortable and safe trip, it’s always a good idea to check with the railway company about the specific configuration of the car and any additional safety measures in place.
