The spot round in the Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) counselling process is designed to fill any remaining vacancies in various institutes after the regular rounds have been completed. This helps ensure that as many applicants as possible get a seat in their preferred programs.

Similar to the regular rounds, the spot round has a limited time frame. Candidates need to act quickly to secure their preferred seats, as the availability of seats can diminish rapidly. Missing out on this opportunity may result in the loss of multiple seats that could have been secured through this round.

No Further Rounds

After the spot round, there are generally no additional rounds of counselling. The seats allocated in the spot round are considered final, and candidates are unlikely to have another chance to secure a seat at the institution of their choice unless they prefer the special round.

Steps to Apply for the Spot Round

Previous Experience with a JoSAA Spot Round

Based on my personal experience during the spot round of JoSAA counselling a year ago, here are some practical insights:

After securing a rank in the JEE (Main), every aspirant is left with the anticipation of JoSAA counselling. The process is extensive, and the spot round is a critical phase.

The JoSAA will declare the schedule for filling online choices. It is crucial to check the official website regularly for any updates and guidelines. I remember paying the registration fee online or through an e-challan and filling my choices for admission.

The real game began with the first round of JoSAA counselling. According to my priorities, I was allotted a seat in an NIT. Then, I reported to the counselling center for seat booking. At the center, my documents were verified, and I was presented with three options:

Freeze the Seat: Choose this option if you are satisfied with your allotted seat and want to secure its admission. Wait for Next Round: This choice means your current allocated seat will no longer be available in subsequent rounds. Keep the Seat Reserved: If you have a better option in the upcoming rounds, you can switch to it.

Unfortunately, as from my batch onwards, our state intermidiate board started using the Grade Point System. However, at the counselling center, we were required to submit marksheets. This meant a visit to our state intermediate board office for the necessary document, which took around 2 hours of standing in a queue. Subsequently, another 6-hour wait at the counselling center ensued. Eventually, after all the paperwork, I opted for the first option and received my admission letter.

Carry Original Documents and Xeroxes: Include all original documents and at least two Xerox copies as per the JoSAA guidelines. Bring water or energy drinks to the counselling center, as standing for long hours can be exhausting. Research Thoroughly: Consult someone experienced and conduct extensive research to understand the changing rankings of institutions. Choose a good institute wisely for your first choice. Utilize Previous Year Cutoffs: Use the previous year's cutoff list available on the JoSAA official website. Avoid relying on other websites for this information. Seek Professional Advice: Before filling online choices and confirming seats, consult someone who is already enrolled in an IIT or NIT. Their experience can be invaluable. Do Not Compromise on Department: Ensure you prioritize a good department or branch over an inferior institution when making your choices. Go with Parents: When reporting to your allotted institution, it is highly recommended to go with your parents for safety and support.
