The Best Second-Hand Bike I Have Purchased
Introduction to My Second-Hand Bikes
All my bikes have been second hand, except for a Vespa Moped. Among the various bikes I've purchased over the years, my choice often comes down to a toss-up between a 2006 FX bike and a 1978 Triumph T140V Bonneville. Comparing the fuel injection of the former with the traditional choke system of the Bonneville, it's challenging to decide. However, the bonnet was almost as fast as a 1441 cc Harley, albeit with only one disc brake. Each bike comes with its own set of unique features and challenges. This article will explore the most memorable and cherished rides I have had.
My 2006 FX
The 2006 FX, with its robust fuel injection system, is a reliable and powerful bike. While it doesn't quite match the brute force of the Harley, it has proven to be an excellent choice for daily rides and leisurely trips. Despite its age, the bike has remained in decent condition, with only minor maintenance required. The smooth performance and its sturdy build make it a top contender for my 'best' list.
My 1978 Triumph T140V Bonneville
On the other hand, the 1978 Triumph T140V Bonneville, while older and perhaps less flashy, is a nostalgic treasure. Although it doesn't quite match the performance of the 2006 FX, the Bonneville's classic design and character make it a beloved part of my collection. The one disc brake can be a drawback, but the bike's overall charm and reliability appeal to me deeply.
Other Exceptional Rides
I have also owned a number of other bikes, including an 1982 CB650 Honda, which held the longest period of ownership for me. Despite putting 36,000 miles on it, the bike eventually required too much upkeep and maintenance. With the CB650, I had to frequently clean fuel lines, sync carburetors, and deal with the bike's age, which made it less appealing. Although this bike holds many memories, its upkeep took its toll on my enthusiasm over time.
Early Treasure: The CB350 K1
My earliest and most memorable second-hand purchase was the CB350 K1, a remarkable bike that I bought for 95 cents a cc in 1973 at around four years old and 15,000 miles. It earned me a total of $350 in 1977 after I put 60,000 more miles on it. This was the bike that fueled my love for motorcycles.
The CB350 K1, despite not being the fastest or smoothest bike, started reliably when kicked over, with electronic starter being dependent on the battery's age. However, it could cruise all day at 65 mph and deliver an impressive 65 mpg. As it aged, I had to red-line it daily to clear plug fouling, and monthly upkeep involved changing the oil, cleaning the oil filter, and checking the plugs, points, and tappets. This bike's rugged handling and performance were qualities that stood out to me, and its efficiency was particularly noteworthy. The bike was capable of indicated 85 mph and could be pulled off from stationary in fifth gear with balanced carburetors. In total, I've ridden about a dozen bikes, and none have resonated as deeply as the CB350 K1.
Besides these bikes, I have owned several others, but the two bikes that stand out the most are the 2006 FX and the CB350 K1. The FX represents modern reliability, while the CB350 K1 signifies nostalgia and a deeper love for motorcycles. My experience with these bikes has taught me that the best bikes are often those that combine performance, reliability, and a nostalgic appeal.
Conclusion
The bikes I've purchased over the years, especially the second-hand ones, have brought me joy and inspiration. Each ride, whether on a sleek modern model or a classic antique, has left a lasting impression and shaped my collection. The CB350 K1, in particular, remains a cherished childhood memory and a testament to the lasting impact of well-chosen second-hand bikes. If you're looking for a great second-hand bike, consider one that strikes the balance between performance, reliability, and emotional value.
