The Impact of Coronavirus on Ride-Sharing: A Personal Story

Two weeks ago, it finally occurred to me that driving as a ride-share driver was no longer a viable option. I had been doing it for three years, but the current situation brought about a significant change in my perspective.

A Personal Reflection on Ride-Sharing

Before the pandemic, I could easily forget the discomfort of being sick. I’d experienced the flu before, but it was nothing compared to the illness I’m currently facing. This is something entirely different. At 65, my immune system is weakening, and the risk of contracting a severe illness is higher. Moreover, the risk-reward ratio doesn't make sense. The rewards are few, and the risks are significant.

Financial Challenges and Lack of Profitability

The coronavirus didn’t just change my mindset; it also highlighted the underlying issues in the ride-sharing industry. The rates paid to drivers are unreasonably low, making it impossible to break even. Companies like Uber and Lyft chose profits over the well-being of their drivers, leading to a system that exploits people rather than supports them. Some drivers, misguided by false perceptions, continue to believe they are making a profit, while others are unscrupulous, taking advantage of unsuspecting passengers.

Switching to Food Delivery and Other Measures

I’ve since switched to food delivery platforms like Postmates and Caviar. While the risk for my wife is lower as she works through barriers, I still face constant exposure. I now use personal protective measures, such as N95 masks, gloves, and hand sanitizers. This helps mitigate some of the risk but remains a daily challenge.

A memorable incident occurred when I obtained a large supply of hand sanitizer from a building’s generator. Spotting a bar with an ample supply of disinfectant spray, I took one. These measures are crucial in keeping us safe while maintaining our income. A clear plastic window installed between my driver’s seat and the back of the car further enhances safety.

Impact on the Industry and Broader Concerns

Despite the improvements in personal safety measures, the overall risk remains high. I believe that if we were to contract the virus and unknowingly spread it, we could infect hundreds and rapidly spread the illness without realizing it. This risk hasn't been worth taking, and I've had to seek other options to ensure my well-being and that of my family.

Looking Forward and Seeking Unemployment Benefits

In the meantime, I’m relying on other sources of income and waiting for unemployment benefits. The transition to food delivery has allowed us to make more money and minimize contact with the public. This switch was necessary, but it’s certainly not the most enjoyable situation. We’re all working through this challenging time, and it’s crucial to follow safety guidelines to protect those around us.

"It's not the most fun, but it is what it is, and we'll all get through this."

By sharing this experience, I hope to give a voice to ride-share drivers who are facing similar challenges. It’s not just a business decision; it’s a matter of personal safety and moral responsibility.

Stay safe and follow the rules.
