The Reasons Behind Choosing Lyft Over Uber: An Insider’s Perspective
For many, the allure of driving for ride-sharing services like Lyft and Uber comes from the freedom to work around their existing schedules and earn extra income. However, the decision to choose one platform over the other can be based on various factors, including bonuses, incentives, and even personal preferences of the non-traditional worker.
Why Did You Start Driving for Lyft?
As an individual balancing a full-time job, I decided to start driving for Lyft to supplement my income in a highly flexible manner. It offered the perfect opportunity to earn extra cash without the strict schedule demands of traditional shift work. While I do work for both Uber and Lyft due to the inconsistent passenger demand in my area, Lyft has provided a more reliable steady stream of earnings, especially as the two major players have different market distributions.
The to ratio of work in our market is two Uber to one Lyft, meaning Lyft is a more viable option to drive consistently. Moreover, Lyft regularly offers bonuses and incentives that have attracted me to the platform. I am now considering adding Uber to my schedule this summer, recognizing the benefits each platform offers.
A Personal Experience: From Recruited to Exclusively Lyft
Another individual who started driving for Lyft had a unique entry point. Mark Gallagher, a local business owner working weekends in Palm Springs as a Lyft driver, shared a story that highlights the personal and professional benefits of the platform. Initially, he was recruited to drive for Lyft during his evening shifts. The decision was driven by the mission of Lyft, which he found compelling at the start.
However, Mark decided to drive almost exclusively for Lyft, even limiting his driving time, due to the flexible nature of the work. He shared, 'Since May I have only driven for Lyft although I drive very little.' This reflects the comfort and stability he found in the platform, despite the limited time he spends behind the wheel.
Challenges of Driving for Ride-Sharing Services
While the freedom and flexibility of driving for ride-sharing services are appealing, the job can also come with its challenges. Paul, a regular part-time driver working a 34-hour job, faced challenges when he started driving for Uber in 2016. After Lyft left the Houston market due to city driver requirements, Lyft returned when the rules were relaxed in 2017.
Paul’s decision to switch to driving exclusively for Lyft was influenced by the simpler process and the bonuses offered. He mentioned, 'Lyft offered the best bonuses and incentives, which led me to switch and now I only drive for Lyft.' The appeal of Lyft’s incentives and the reduced hassle of working with a single platform drove his decision.
However, driving can be demanding, as evidenced by Mark’s experience where he had to call 911 after dealing with uncooperative passengers on a Saturday night. This incident brought into focus the risks and challenges involved, leading him to reconsider his options.
Flexible and versatile, driving for ride-sharing services like Lyft offers a mix of benefits and challenges. Whether it's the incentives, the flexible working hours, or the balance between personal and professional life, the decision to drive for one specific platform can depend on various factors unique to each individual's situation.
