This is due to the maximum landing weight (MLW) typically being less than the maximum take-off weight (MTOW). However, due to the stress on the aircraft structure, particularly the aluminum components, continuous landings with maximum weight would be detrimental. Hence, fuel valves are installed to facilitate the quick reduction of weight before landing, ensuring the aircraft can still handle a safe landing at a lower weight but with the full fuel capacity.
How Does Fuel Dumping Affect the Environment?
Contrary to popular belief, fuel dumped from an airplane does not rain down on the ground. Instead, it evaporates into the air. In summer, with ambient temperatures around 20 degrees Celsius, dumping fuel at an altitude of 4,000 feet above ground level ensures that no smell reaches the ground. In winter, an additional 1,000 feet in altitude should be considered to ensure no residues affect the ground. There is no need to seek over the ocean to dispose of fuel, as it naturally disperses through evaporation.
A Real-Life Incident of Fuel Dumping
A notable real-life incident involving fuel dumping occurred with an MD11 flight from Helsinki bound for Beijing. During the flight, the crew noticed the diminishing fuel levels in the engine oil tanks. The flight was cleared to return to Helsinki, and the decision to start the fuel dump was made. At an altitude of 3,500 feet AGL, the fuel dump continued over a private housing area during the summer. The crew briefed the co-pilot to monitor the engine oil temperature to prevent overheating due to low oil levels. Upon landing, the mechanics discovered that the missing O-rings in the engine oil chip detector had been improperly installed, leading to the fuel loss.
