Understanding Indian Railways' Train Reservation Chart Preparation Timings
When it comes to traveling by train in India, the preparation of train reservation charts is a critical process that ensures a smooth and efficient journey for all passengers. This article aims to clarify the timings and procedures involved in chart preparation by Indian Railways.
Reservation Basics in Indian Railways
Indian Railways operates a reservation system that includes two main categories of bookings: advance reservations and current bookings. Different categories such as Tatkal, Premium Tatkal, and TATkal Bookings are part of the advance reservation system. The final chart, also known as the main reservation chart, is prepared well before the train's departure to ensure that all booking deadlines are met and that waitlisted passengers are informed of any status changes.
Preparing the Reservation Chart
According to Indian Railways' policy, the reservation chart is prepared at least four hours prior to the train's scheduled departure. This preparatory period allows waitlisted passengers to check if their status has improved, giving them time to decide whether to travel or not.
The process of chart preparation is usually initiated manually by staff inputting a command more than 4 hours and 15 minutes before the train departs. In case of a massive system failure, this might delay the process, but such incidents are extremely rare. Typically, however, the chart is prepared well before the four-hour deadline.
Chart Preparation Timetable
For trains departing after 23:11 on a normal working day, the chart is prepared around 20:00 (8 PM). For trains departing after 18:06 on Sundays or holidays, the chart is prepared around 14:00 (2 PM). For trains departing up to 12:00 noon of the next day, the chart is prepared later to allow the reservation counters to open the next morning. In cases where a chart is not prepared on time due to system failures, it is prepared as soon as the system is back up and running. However, such occurrences are extremely rare.
Current Booking and Its Charts
In addition to the main reservation chart, there is a separate Current Booking Chart prepared 30 minutes before the train's scheduled departure. This chart includes all bookings made through the Current Booking facility, which is available online through IRCTC.
The main chart serves as the de facto final chart, freezing the status of all advance reservations, including RAC and waiting list passengers. Changing the status of these passengers is not possible after the main chart is prepared. The current booking chart, however, does not affect the status of advance reservation passengers and is only relevant for those booking after the main chart has been prepared.
Reservations and Charting Timeline Summary
Advance reservations open up to 120 days prior to the train starting. Tatkal and Premium Tatkal bookings open at 10:00 AM and 11:00 AM, respectively, the day before the train's departure. All advance reservations close prior to the charting process, which may take up to 15 minutes. Main charts are prepared around 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM on Sundays and major holidays, or between 7:00 PM and 9:00 PM on normal working days for trains departing after 11:00 PM. Early morning trains are prepared much ahead of this 4-hour deadline. The main charts are then handed over to the train conductor or train traffic executives, while the current chart is prepared just before the train's departure and handed over to the same officials. Current bookings close 30 minutes prior to the train's departure.
Understanding these timelines is essential for passengers who wish to travel efficiently and avoid any confusion regarding their reservations.
Conclusion
By following the procedures and understanding the timelines, passengers can plan their travel smoother and avoid any last-minute complications. With clear communication and adherence to these guidelines, the Indian Railways reservation system can ensure a hassle-free journey for all passengers.
