Understanding the BH Vehicle Registration and RTO Tax for Petrol Vehicles Below 10 Lakhs
As of my last update in August 2023, the Road Tax RTO tax for Bharat Stage (BS) vehicles in the BH series, including petrol vehicles priced below 10 lakhs, was set at 8 in some states. However, it's important to note that the specific duration for which this rate applies can vary by state and the regulations in place at that time.
RTO Tax Basics
The RTO tax is a one-time payment made at the time of vehicle registration and it does not have an annual renewal requirement. Therefore, if the government has set the rate at 8 for petrol vehicles priced below 10 lakhs, this rate would apply to the initial registration and not for a specific number of years.
Relocating a Car with BH Registration
Relocating a car or a two-wheeler to another state can be quite a hassle. One must get an NOC (No Objection Certificate) from the current state and then re-register the vehicle in the new state, which involves paying road tax to the new state.
Recently, in order to ease this process, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has introduced a new system called the "BH" registration series. This system fully simplifies the registration process, making it entirely online and eliminating the need for complicated paperwork.
Eligibility and Registration Process
The new system of assigning BH registration marks to vehicles is set to come into force from September 15, 2021. Vehicles bearing the BH registration mark will not need to be re-registered in a new state if they relocate within India.
Eligibility for the BH series includes government and PSU employees, and employees of private companies with offices in at least four states/UTs. These employees can apply by filling out Form 60 and providing valid employment ID/proof online. The state authorities will then verify the proof and assign the BH registration. The registration number will be randomly generated by a computer.
RTO Tax for BH Vehicles
For petrol vehicles with a cost below 10 lakhs and in multiples of 2, the RTO tax under the BH system is as follows:
Petrol vehicles below 10 lakhs: 8 for 2 years and 8 for every additional 2 years Petrol vehicles between 10-20 lakhs: 10 Petrol vehicles above 20 lakhs: 12Note that diesel vehicles incur an additional tax of 2, while electric vehicles have a tax that is 2 less than the above rates.
The road tax charged varies from state to state, but these rates represent the general structure under the BH series.
Conclusion and Further Resources
To get the most accurate and updated information, especially if there have been any changes after August 2023, it is best to consult the official transport department or the RTO in your state. They can provide the latest details on tax rates and regulations.
