Unforgettable Rides: Awkward, Funny, and Scary Experiences on Public Transport

When traveling on public transport such as trains, buses, or even airplanes, there are moments that can make your journey particularly memorable – some of these may be awkward, funny, or even scary. In this article, we'll explore a few such incidents that one might encounter during their travels.

Awkward Moments on Trains

One of the more compelling stories comes from a weekend train journey between the city of work and native city. On that particular Sunday afternoon, my brother and I boarded the train to head back to our workplace. We were seated on individual seats that could open up to become a side berth. However, two men loudly demanded that we convert our seats so that more passengers could fit. Initially, we politely said that it would be uncomfortable to sit that close for such a long journey. The men, however, refused to listen and continued to shout. Faced with this unwelcome situation, I had to shout back, threatening to resist their forceful actions. Thankfully, they eventually quieted down. The experience left me feeling that there is a lack of respect for reserved seating in short-duration train rides.

Continuing Awkward Moments in Other Public Transport

There have been other awkward moments, such as a nighttime incident on a family vacation while traveling in a sleeper coach. At the time, I was 18 or 19 and sharing a berth with a couple and their child. During the night, a man sleeping below me attempted to touch my foot through the gap in the wooden logs. Despite my discomfort, I did not have the courage to yell at him and decided to stand up and sit with a friend. In another instance, while on a city bus to college when I was 16, there was a middle-aged man who was leaning against me, seemingly unable to stand straight. He also tried to touch my shoulder once. To avoid a confrontation, I simply stood up and moved to the front of the bus until my stop.

Scary Experiences on Public Transport

A scary experience also comes from a bus journey to my college during a crowded day. A middle-aged man was leaning against me, as if he could not stand on his own while the bus was in motion. He even attempted to touch my shoulder once. Again, to avoid a confrontation, I stood up and moved to the front of the bus until my stop.

Other Public Transport Incidents

Lastly, during my weekend commutes between my native place and city of work, I occasionally took either a bus or train, depending on convenience. One day, I shared a bus seat with a man and his mother. We discussed general topics to pass the time. At the end of the journey, he asked for my contact information so we could connect later. That request felt both funny and awkward, but I politely declined, saying, “If it's meant to be, we will meet again.” To my disappointment, we never did.

Public transport experiences can be a mix of the awkward, funny, and even scary. These incidents not only make the journey memorable but also remind us to be vigilant and respectful during our travels.
