Unusual Modes of Transportation: A Journey Beyond the Ordinary

At first glance, it seems easier to list the modes of transportation I have used, rather than the ones I have not. However, the thrill of these adventures has long since passed, and the idea of revisiting them is not as appealing as it once was. From the shanks pony on foot to the jet, the list is quite extensive. But what about the rocket or the unicycle? These days, I am content with exploring the world in more conventional ways, with the occasional dash of the extraordinary.

Exploring the Exotic and Ordinary

It's easier to list the modes of travel I have used:

Walking – The most basic and common form of transport. Car – Including taxis and various car models. Omnibus – Apart from the Clapham version, which has a special place in history. Trolleybus – A unique experience for many. Bicycle – For the environmentally conscious or the physically active. Scooter – A convenient, pedal-less option. Motorcycle – For speed and freedom. Lorry/Truck – For long-distance freight transport. Roller Skates – A nostalgic and often lighthearted adventure. Skateboard – Home-made, for those who love the DIY approach. Light Aeroplane – For the air enthusiast. Jumbo Jet – For crossing great distances. Jeepney – A colorful public transportation in various cities. Ocean Liner/Ferry – For those who enjoy the journey. Camel – For a unique desert experience, though, not recommended.

The Ignored Adventures

While I have tried most conventional modes of transport, there are some that remain unexplored. These include:

Hot Air Balloon – A breathtaking but potentially uncomfortable experience. Space Rocket – The ultimate adventure for the astronaut in me, but more suited for a parachute usage. Unicycle – A fun challenge for the balance-impaired. Unicorn – A mythical mode of transport, though the idea is worth a thought. Exotic Snowmobiles – Ideal for snowy terrains, not my cup of tea. Dug-Out Canoe – A traditional means of transport, but not for me.

Modern Adventures

While I have tried most traditional forms of transport, there is one modern mode that captures my imagination – High Speed Rail. Admittedly, the thought of high-speed travel is intriguing, but my primary concern is the behavior of other passengers. While going from Nottingham to Sheffield at 200 mph sounds exhilarating, the frequent stops in the UK make such a speed irrelevant. The Shinkansen in Japan, with its impeccable timetabling, impresses me more than the sheer speed.

Adventures of the Past

In my youth, I had the pleasure of riding horses and occasionally motorcycles, but it's been a while since then. Horses were a special treat, but the idea of being on a horse today doesn't hold as much allure. I have managed one trip on both a donkey and a horse, but I am now a bit too old for such adventures. Similarly, hot air balloons and gliders have always been on my list, but they remain untried.

Other Unexplored Modes of Transport

Rocket Ship – To the moon, a dream that remains unfulfilled. Submarine – Yellow or any other variety, an adventure that has not been embarked upon. Donkeys in Southern France – A unique mode of transportation for rural areas. Balloons – For circumnavigating the globe, an epic journey waiting to be undertaken. Dog Sled in the South Pole – For the ultimate survival challenge. Outrigger or Raft Across the Pacific – For those who love the open sea. Motorcycle – While I have ridden a scooter in Rome, the possibility of a full-fledged motorcycle adventure still calls out. Jet Ski – A fast and fun water sport, yet to be experienced. Go-Kart – For a burst of speed on land, an experience I have not had.

Conclusion

The world is full of diverse and unique modes of transportation, each with its own charm and adventure. While I have tried most, there are still many that remain unexplored. Whether it's a hot air balloon, a rocket ship, or a simple motorcycle, there is always more to discover. Even if these modes are not on my list, embracing the spirit of adventure can lead to new and exciting experiences.
