Why I Chose to Ride My Bike: Exploring the Joys and Benefits of Choosing Alternative Modes of Transport

As a seasoned driver, I own three cars, one of which is indeed driveable. Another is up for sale, available on Craigslist, and the last one is undergoing a quick restoration for use as my winter unit before its spring overhaul. While I have the option to drive a 4000-pound car with a 300-horsepower V12, I often prefer to take the bike to work. This decision is not just about my preference or personal choice, but it also highlights the broader benefits and importance of alternative modes of transport.

Driver's License and Safety

I took the written and practical driver's license test back in 1980 and have since then renewed it numerous times. Throughout the years, I have attended several defensive driving classes to keep my knowledge fresh and have maintained a spotless driving record without any violations. My auto insurance has never had a gap, indicating a consistent effort to ensure safety and security on the roads.

My car is usually stored in a garage within a gated community, making it a secure investment. Additionally, I don’t drive a car frequently and I don't offer rides to clients. This minimizes my carbon footprint and reduces the wear and tear on my vehicle. The car is incredibly reliable, with all modern safety features, including advanced driver-assist systems (ADAS).

The Joy of Riding a Bike

Choosing to bike to work offers a myriad of benefits that go beyond just physical health. Firstly, it provides an excellent cardiovascular workout. The gentle strain on the body doesn't put too much pressure, yet it keeps your heart healthy and your body energized. Biking to work is also a great way to clear the mind, offering moments of tranquility that can improve mental health. The fresh air and natural scenery can boost your mood and enhance productivity for the rest of the day.

Living a more sustainable lifestyle by biking also contributes to the global environmental goals. Emissions from cars are a significant contributor to air pollution and climate change. By choosing to bike, I am reducing my carbon footprint and supporting a healthier planet.

Encouraging Responsible Driving and Alternative Transport

While I am a capable and responsible driver, I believe that it is essential to encourage others to make similar choices. Many people hesitate to give up their cars because they feel it might be too inconvenient or they don't have alternative options. However, as I have demonstrated, biking can be a viable and enjoyable alternative. With the right infrastructure and support, more individuals can embrace biking as a means of daily transportation.

Public transportation, carpooling, and bike-sharing programs can also help shift the norms. These initiatives not only reduce the overall number of vehicles on the road but also foster a sense of community and efficiency. Furthermore, promoting these alternatives can inspire a generation to think sustainably and responsibly about transportation.

In conclusion, while I own multiple cars, my recent work commute by bike is a humble reminder of the power of responsible driving and the importance of embracing alternative modes of transportation. By choosing to bike, I not only enjoy the benefits of physical and mental health but also contribute positively to the environment. It's a small but impactful step towards a better, more sustainable future.
