Have you ever stopped to consider why you love bikes so much? For many of us, the love affair with biking goes beyond mere transportation. It’s a combination of physical activity, adventure, and social interaction that makes it a favorite hobby. Cycling is gentle on the joints, versatile in the places it can be done, and fosters both physical and mental well-being. Moreover, it’s a sustainable and eco-friendly mode of transportation. Join me as we explore the reasons behind my own enduring love for bikes.

My Journey with Bikes

My relationship with bikes began in my teenage years, and it’s been an exhilarating journey ever since. There’s something magical about the way cycling combines freedom with an adrenaline rush that draws me in and keeps me coming back for more. It’s not just about reaching a destination; it’s about the feeling of the wind in your face, the engaging hum of the engine, and the invigorating sense of being in control of your own adventure.

Picture this: during college, I saved up for months to finally purchase my dream bike, a sleek and shiny machine that responded to every twist of the throttle. That bike became my gateway to escaping monotony and embracing the open road. I’ve ridden through winding mountain trails, felt the warmth of the sun on my back during long coastal stretches, and even encountered unexpected rainstorms that turned into some of the most unforgettable rides. There’s a shared camaraderie among bikers – a subtle connection formed when nodding at fellow riders as we pass each other on the road. This creates a sense of belonging to a unique community.

Biking: A Grounding and Meditative Experience

Beyond the thrill and camaraderie, bikes have a way of grounding me. When life is hectic, strapping on a helmet and setting off on the road can be a therapeutic escape. It’s a form of meditation on two wheels. The slow and steady pace of cycling allows you to truly appreciate the places you visit. It fosters patience and a deeper connection with the environment. Riding a bike also provides a sense of achievement as you gradually increase your distances and challenge yourself. This journey has taught me a lot in life!

Biking in India: Slow Pace and Sense of Achievement

While biking can be a joyful experience, it’s essential to acknowledge the unique challenges and perspectives for cyclists in different regions. In India, for example, the notion of biking is often closely associated with specific riding conditions and community bonding. I have been a motorbiker since a young age and became interested in cycling to improve my overall fitness. Soon, I was captivated by the sense of achievement each ride brought. From my first 50 kilometers to successfully traveling to nearby cities, the journey with bikes has been fulfilling.

Traveling to Bhutan (1300 kilometers) and Nepal (1500 kilometers), and cycling to Manali to Khardung La, I discovered the slow pace of biking allows you to truly fall in love with the places you visit. It’s a unique way to explore and learn about the world. Cycling as a mode of transport teaches you to be more patient and work harder for things you love, while also giving a sense of accomplishment.

My twin-cylinder motorcycle (often referred to as my "leg bike") is my most cherished. It’s not just a mode of transportation; it’s a connection to a community of like-minded people. Join me on the open road and you’ll feel the sense of camaraderie and shared joy. Happy riding!
