Why Obtaining a UAE Driving License Is More Challenging
Why Obtaining a UAE Driving License Is More Challenging
The process of obtaining a driving license in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) can be significantly more complex and costly for many expatriates. Unlike in Canada where obtaining a license involves straightforward processes, the UAE licensing requirements can be daunting. Read on to discover the unique challenges and financial obstacles one expat encountered during their quest for the UAE driving license.
Understanding the Requirements
One of the primary hurdles in the UAE is the necessity for a visa sponsor to provide a no objection letter. This requirement, which many employers are unaware of or do not appreciate, can make obtaining a driving license a cumbersome process. The no objection letter is required to open a traffic file with the Department of Civil Services.
Financial Burdens
The non-refundable registration fee for opening a traffic file is AED 872.50, followed by an AED 300 fee for eye tests and AED 300 for classes at the typing center. The main training classes for the practical test cost AED 3052.50. Coupled with travel expenses from Abu Dhabi to Mussafah, the total expenses can mount up quickly.
The Road to Your First Drive
In September 2020, the process began with a visit to EDC to open a file, followed by eye tests and typing center visits. Initially, only a few training classes were available, and it became clear that additional classes would need to be scheduled over a period of a couple of months. Due to the limited availability, these training classes were arranged in a fragmented manner, leading to frustration and additional costs.
Driving Theory and Practical TestsThe first theory test was taken on October 5, 2020, and practical training commenced on October 22, 2020. Training continued with 10 hours of road training, each session costing AED 60, for a total of AED 600, over 10 days. Travel expenses to Mussafah contributed an additional AED 500. By November 1st, all practical training was completed, and the total expenses up to this point amounted to AED 7000.
The Test ExperienceAfter road training and a series of appointments to book the practical test date, the day finally arrived on December 25, 2020, for the parking test. A modest AED 300 booking fee was paid, and the test was successfully completed without major issues. However, the journey to the final test on December 22, 2020, was marked by a last-minute panic and some nerves. The final test involved a police officer who was extremely strict, but with last-minute preparations and a strategy to prove readiness, the test was successfully passed.
The Final Costs and Lessons LearnedIn total, the entire process, including travel expenses, eye tests, fees, and the final license issuance, resulted in a cost of AED 9500 to AED 10000. The financial burden, mainly due to frequent travel, was significant but considered worth it. The time taken was approximately three months, emphasizing the importance of patience and confidence.
ConclusionIn conclusion, the process of obtaining a driving license in the UAE is more taxing than one might expect, requiring careful planning, sufficient financial preparation, and a lot of patience. However, with the right approach, it is possible to navigate through the challenging requirements and achieve the goal of driving legally in the country.
