WiFi on LIRR: Current Status and Future Prospects
As of August 2023, the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) is still in the process of implementing WiFi on its trains. This rollout began in 2021, with the aim to continue through subsequent years. Full implementation is expected to be completed in the early 2020s. For the most current status on WiFi availability, I recommend checking the official LIRR website or their latest announcements. Since then, there may have been updates or changes that are not reflected here.
Challenges and Implications
The introduction of WiFi on LIRR trains has been a topic of discussion, with both supporters and skeptics. Critics argue that WiFi installation on trains is too expensive and could lead to increased fares. Additionally, nearly everyone today either has unlimited data or sufficient data plans to cover their commuting needs. As of my last update, the installation of WiFi inside trains is not yet feasible due to technical and financial constraints. Tunnel WiFi, on the other hand, might be more feasible but is not planned for the trains themselves.
Future Outlook and Non-WiFi Upgrades
Despite the challenges, the LIRR is still committed to enhancing the travel experience for its commuters. The upcoming new fleet of M-9 cars will include USB ports for charging electronic devices. These USB ports are a significant upgrade, providing commuters with another way to stay connected while they travel.
Anything beyond USB ports, such as onboard WiFi, is still a matter of when. The decision to proceed with more substantial upgrades, including WiFi, will depend on a variety of factors, including budget, technological advancements, and the overall strategic direction of the LIRR board.
Stay Informed
To keep up with the latest developments and ensure you have the most current information, it is advisable to regularly check the official LIRR website or follow their announcements. Subscribers to LIRR’s newsletters or social media accounts can also receive updates directly through these platforms.
For more detailed information or specific questions about WiFi on LIRR, you can reach out to the LIRR directly via their customer service lines or email. The LIRR team is always working to provide the best possible service to its commuters, and staying informed is key to being a well-prepared traveler.
