Worst-Case Scenarios for Travel Abroad: Real and Common Threats

Sarah asked me, "Would you rather travel to Spain or be eaten alive by Tom Hanks?" I responded with, "Travel to Spain." He chuckled and said, "Trick question." Then, to my horror, Tom Hanks ate me with a bottle of Chianti, not kind or respectful, laughing as he consumed me. A trick question indeed.

Though I had several 40 years of travel experience, nothing particularly dramatic had ever happened. I'm here to share some of the real and common incidences that travelers have encountered to help you be better prepared for your next trip abroad. This isn't meant to scare you, but to help you be more aware.

Real and Dreading Incidents

Travelers abroad have faced some of the worst things imaginable:

Murders and Rapes: Sadly, violence is a stark reality in some regions. Many travelers have experienced these traumatic incidents, jeopardizing their safety and peace of mind. Gone Missing: Disappearance and abduction are also potential dangers, especially in foreign lands where the safety systems may not be as robust. Accidental Deaths: Falling from heights or drowning have claimed lives of travelers, highlighting the risks of being in unfamiliar surroundings. Robberies and Scams: Not a rare occurrence, some travelers have lost significant amounts of money or even their identities. For some, the Eiffel Tower was tragically sold instead of stolen. Health Risks: Consuming contaminated water or food can lead to severe illness, hampering a traveler's enjoyment and health. Accidental Injuries: Intoxicated adventures can result in serious injuries or even broken limbs.

These events are often far worse than what we typically read in light-hearted travel blogs. However, despite these risks, hundreds of millions of travelers manage to have enjoyable and memorable experiences each year.

Common Yet Trivial Distractions

While these extreme events may disrupt some trips, they're not always the most frustrating elements of travel. Here are some common yet annoying issues that can ruin your experience:

Sitting Next to a Terrible Neighbor

Have you ever sat next to a passenger who is not only uncomfortable but also rude? Some travelers find themselves in such situations, making the journey even more irritating. If you're a passenger with bad manners, realize that snuggling up to a stranger's shoulder is not acceptable. Changing the movie your neighbor is watching because you can't control your emotions is equally inappropriate.

The Inconvenience of Air Travel

Air travel can be a logistical nightmare:

TSA Checkpoints: Endless lines at the TSA checkpoint are a common occurrence. At major airports, expect wait times of over 30 minutes, sometimes extending to more than two hours. This can cause delays, missed flights, or even lost patience. Gate Delays: Arriving early is advisable, but you still might face hours of waiting. This is especially true for international flights where you have to factor in additional security checks. Staying active, perhaps with a walk or a snack, can help pass the time. Security Checks: Some travelers face the inconvenience of having to take off their shoes, belts, and other items for security. It's important to collaborate for a more efficient flow and not take the queue's time unnecessarily.

Revisit these tips to ensure a smoother travel experience, avoiding the frustrations that can mar even the most well-planned trip.
