Dhaka's Metro System: Under Construction but Approaching Reality

Does Dhaka have a metro system? Yes, it is under construction. The government of Bangladesh has initiated a massive project to build one of the most efficient metro systems in South Asia, primarily through collaboration with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).

Dhaka, now one of the largest cities in South Asia, is grappling with a significant problem: traffic congestion. With rapid urbanization, Dhaka has become one of the fastest-growing megacities, exacerbating the already severe traffic issues. This necessitated a comprehensive solution, leading to the introduction of the MRT system.

Initiatives and Developments

The current initiative, led by the government, includes the development of six MRT lines. The first phase, MRT Line -6, a 21.1 kilometre stretch with 17 stations, connecting Uttra to Komlapur, is scheduled to be operational by the end of 2020. The line will provide a crucial link in reconstructing the city's public transportation infrastructure.

Other lines are also under development:

MRT Line 5: Hemayetpur to Kolabagan, 23 kilometres long with 24 stations, expected to be completed in 2026. MRT Line 1: Dhaka Airport to Purbachol, 20 kilometres with 18 stations, to be completed by 2025. MRT Line 4 and MRT Line -2, planned for completion in 2030, will further expand the network coverage.

The city also sees the construction of subways in different areas like Mirpur, Banani, and Gulsan. However, these projects are yet to be finalized.

Operational and Maintenance Plan

Bangladesh's Ministry of Communications and Postal Services has established a company specifically for the operation and maintenance of Dhaka Metro. This move is aimed at ensuring the smooth running and sustainability of the metro system once it is operational.

Benefits and Future Prospects

The implementation of multiple metro lines will significantly alleviate traffic congestion. The MRT system will provide a much-needed relief to commuters who currently rely on overcrowded buses and private vehicles. Additionally, the metro will increase the mobility of residents and boost economic productivity by reducing travel times and enhancing accessibility.

The infrastructure development is expected to attract investment and foster urban development, which is crucial for Dhaka's future growth. The government's plan to extend the metro network beyond 2030 is a clear indication of their commitment to urban modernization.

Conclusion

While Dhaka's metro system is not yet fully operational, the construction efforts are underway and are set to revolutionize public transportation in the city. By 2030, the network will comprise six lines, creating a robust and efficient transit system that will make Dhaka more flexible and productive. Stay tuned for updates as the project progresses.
