The Habibganj railway station, once named after Nawab Sultan Jahan Begum, the last Begum of Bhopal, has seen a significant change in its name and significance. In 2021, it was renamed to Rani Kamlapati Railway Station, honoring a historical queen who played a crucial role in Bhopal's heritage.

Rani Kamlapati: A Historical Figure Remembered

Recently, the station has undergone a transformation, not just in its name, but also in its purpose and heritage. Rani Kamlapati, born as the daughter of Raja Kirpal Singh Sarautia of the princely state of Salkanpur Sehore, was a prominent figure in the region. She was the widow of Nizam Shah, a member of the Gond dynasty who ruled the Ginnorgarh, 55 kilometers from Bhopal, in the 18th century.

Nizam Shah's Affection and the Kamlapati Palace

Deeply in love with Rani Kamlapati, Nizam Shah built a magnificent seven-storyed Kamlapati Palace in Bhopal, a symbol of his affection for her. According to historical records, Rani Kamlapati was known for her bravery and resilience, particularly after her husband's death, when she faced aggressors and governed the region valiantly.

The State Government's Honouring of Rani Kamlapati

Shivraj Singh Chouhan, the Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh, praised Rani Kamlapati for her outstanding contributions to Bhopal. She was well-known for her work in water management, and played a significant role in establishing public parks and temples. Additionally, she was known for her exceptional skills in horse riding, wrestling, and archery.

Rani Kamlapati passed away in 1723, marking the beginning of the rule of Nawabs in Bhopal. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the renamed and renovated Habibganj station on November 15, 2021, which will now be known as Rani Kamalapati station. This inauguration coincides with the celebration of 'Janjatiya Gaurav Diwas' (National Heritage Day) in memory of Birsa Munda, a prominent figure from Jharkhand.
