Current Status: The Boeing 747-8 (VC-25B)

The current Air Force One is the VC-25B, based on the Boeing 747-8. This aircraft was chosen as a replacement for the VC-25A, which is based on the 747-200 and is nearing 40 years in service. The VC-25B is being developed and is expected to enter service around 2024. This new aircraft is designed to serve the president and the government for the next several decades, potentially until 2060.

Challenges in Aircraft Choice

When considering future needs, the Air Force One will have to adapt to changing requirements. One of the primary challenges lies in the size and capability of the aircraft. While the 747-8 is a capable plane, the production lines for this model are scheduled to be shut down. This leaves an open question about what the next Air Force One aircraft will be.

While the 777-9 is a strong candidate, other options are also being considered. The Near Future: The VC-25Bs

Two aircraft were intended for the Russian airline Transaero but were never delivered due to the airline's bankruptcy. The USAF purchased these aircraft for conversion into VC-25Bs.

Production and Delivery

The production of the 747-8 is coming to an end, with the last scheduled delivery set for this fall. As of now, there are four 747-8Fs left to be delivered, with the last one possibly scheduled for delivery this year. However, the production lines are already shutting down at some of the major subcontractors. For example, Triumph, which made critical components of the fuselage, is auctioning off its tooling.

While the question of what the next Air Force One will be remains open, it is currently academic. Given the time and comprehensive nature of the certification process, it is unlikely that serious consideration will be given to this issue for the next 20 years.
