As an aviation enthusiast, airplanes have always held a special place in my heart. From the thrill of taking to the skies to the fascinating history behind each aircraft, there is so much to love about these majestic machines. Over my career as an air radar mechanic from 1975 to 2018, I gained an unparalleled understanding of what makes airplanes special.

My father and brothers served in the Royal Air Force during World War II, instilling in me a deep fascination with anything that flies.

The Journey of a Lifelong Air Radar Mechanic

My journey with air radar began in 1949 when I joined the Royal Air Force as a Boy Entrant, a private school for young boys to train for military service. At 16, I was assigned to the Air Radar trade, something I knew nothing about. The training was intense and included a wide range of skills, from marching and firing weapons to learning how to escape from a sinking aircraft. My primary focus was on maintaining and repairing the Gloster Javelin FAW Fighter All Weather aircraft, which carried a plethora of electronic equipment.

Life on the Fighter Station

The daily routine on a fighter station was meticulous and demanding. Each squadron had a hanger, offices, and workshops to keep their aircraft flying. Ground crews like myself would work on grounded aircraft to return them to flyable status or await the return of our aerial charges. The Javelin aircraft returned from their sorties and were closely inspected for any issues. Radar teams would turn on all equipment and test the parameters to ensure everything was functioning correctly. The turnaround time for aircraft was critical, and any delay could compromise mission success.

The Thrill of Flying

As a radar technician, my role was crucial in ensuring the safe operation of the Javelins. The aircraft had a limited flying duration due to the nature of their missions.
